Today I choose to smile while I sing—because singing is what I love most, because love matters more than technique.
I choose to smile while the notes dance from my heart to my lips. I choose to let the melody dance through my body and come hug my surroundings.
I choose to let the breath rock me and change what I believe about magic. I choose to let it stir the mud that weighs my body down, still.
I choose to embrace the emotions that are released, even when they scare and unravel me… even when they stop my singing for a cry or a sigh that needed to be freed—because I’ve learned that there is no genuine smile to be experienced for those who will not bow to their tears.
Today I choose to smile while I sing, even when I'm scared that my singing will not be received, or on pitch or pretty.
I choose to smile because it's not about perfection, it's about the most intimate authenticity. So I choose to smile no matter how much it hurts, unsettles or embarrasses me. I choose to smile because singing is my greatest love and love is holy.
Today I choose to smile while I sing, because I have songs in my heart asking to be embodied, and songs are made of love and love is reason enough to smile through joy and through grief.
